Get used to the response – in my personal experience people veil their lack of understanding and jealousy of those in the legal career by expressing outward anger towards the profession. If people truly hated attorneys, there wouldn’t be so many movies and TV shows on the subject. The choice between medicine and law simply isn’t. People who are stellar lawyers require entirely different skills than those who are great doctors. You need to get rid of the “I would love to defend the innocent in court” idea. The reality almost no cases which make it to trial are black-and-white. If they were, they would have settled. The question is often one of degree (is the defendant guilty of burglary like the state is suggesting, or should the defendant only be charged with breaking and entering?). The other reality is that our system thrives on competent representation of both sides, even the guilty/”evil” side.
