What is SMA – Stone Mastic Asphalt?
Stone Mastic Asphalt is a specially modified bituminous material within the Thin Surfacing or Thin Veneer family, which is hot laid over the road surface by a paving machine. It is a relatively new product developed by the road industry to provide benefits of a smooth quiet surface without the need for expensive reconstruction of the pavement underneath. This treatment is used on roads with high traffic flows that have severe irregularities or structural problems. Because the material has a high strength it can be laid in relatively thin layers.
