What is Sino-Japanese Studies?
It can be many things, but in its broadest and most inclusive form, Sino-Japanese studies entails all those fields of research that cover both China and Japan, including Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, comparative studies, and other topics that span both nations. While breaching the customary institutional division between Chinese and Japanese studies, the field can also incorporate concerns from history, literature, art history, politics, economics, philosophy, and religion. A guide to Sino-Japanese studies can thus be as expansive as the entire Japanese Bibliography project, times two. Hence, I can only offer some basic resources in a limited number of fields, centering on history. Also, at present, this page is heavily geared toward Japanese studies of China in the 20th century, reflecting my own interests.
