What is Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP)?
SMTP works in union with two protocols (set of rules) used to send email from your personal email service to a mail server, or from one email server to another. The two protocols that are necessary for setup of any SMTP service requires a POP (Posts Office Protocol) or IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol.) These are both designed to retrieve email from all existing mail servers. Every email program out there is set up to use these and you’ve seen them mentioned as you’ve set up new email accounts. The sending part (SMTP outgoing mail server) can sometimes be a problem. On desktop computers that stay in one place have their outgoing SMTP server set up once and they’re good to go. This setting doesn’t need to be changed since it’s always using the server on the network. If you use a laptop, however, you might jump on different networks as you go to meet clients or stop at the coffee shop.
