What is Silent Reflux and why is it important?
The word reflux comes from Latin, re – meaning back and fluere meaning flow. Thus reflux means backflow, and it is the backflow of stomach (gastric) contents into the throat that causes silent reflux. This type of reflux is called silent because two out of three sufferers do not have heartburn or other digestive symptoms, they can have symptoms such as sore throat, chronic throat clearing, cough, hoarseness, a sensation of a lump in the throat and sometimes even post-nasal drip. Silent reflux also may be associated with choking episodes, sinus disease, trouble sleeping, and asthma.
