Baptism is necessary before joining the Khalsa Panth. Waheguru Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the practice with the establishment of order of the Khalsa in 1699 A.D. The Amrit (Baptism) ceremony is held in the presence of Beant Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. Five baptized Sikhs known for their piety are called Panj Piyaras, all wearing the five symbols – Kesh (Unshorn hair), Kangha (Comb), Khachehra (Undershorts), Kara (Iron bracelet), Kirpan (Sword) sit infront of Beant Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. One of the five explains the principles of Sikhism to those who want to be baptized. After the candidates have signified their acceptance, one of the five offers Ardas. Then all the five sit around an iron – vessel containing fresh water and a quantity of sweet patasas (a kind of crystallized sugar). They recite the five Banis: Sri Japuji Sahib, Sri Jaap Sahib, Tavprasad Savaiye, Sri Chaupayee Sahib, and Sri Anand Sahib. The reciter stirs the water with double edged swor
