What is significant contribution of Jyoti Basu for Indians?
Poondi Sir has said a lot, and I don’t find myself in position to add lot more to that but still I want to add few pennies to the dollars of Poondi sir. There are very few leaders (and I used the word leaders not politician because Late Jyoti Basu was leader), who leave the chair of Prime Minister for ideologies. Mr. Basu decided not to be Prime Minister because CPI(M) decided that in polite bureau decided to do so, and Mr. Basu decided to go by the bureau, though he could have changed the the decision of polite bureau by his influence. Later most of the tallest CPI(M) leaders concluded this as decision of CPI(M) as historical blunder. I would say, after Jyoti Basu, there is only one politician left whom I can call as leader who is alive, that is vetaran BJP leader and our beloved Ex-PM Sri Atal Bihari Vajapayee. Without his towering personality communists wd nt hv been able to rule for so long. It is much like EMS. In the communist movement of India there are very few leaders like Basu and EMS who had actually applied communist ideologies in Indian set-up. Most communist leaders taht we know of have no grass root connection and never got the chance to practise communism to the actual poor masses of India. However, as a CM Jyoti Basu and his govt.’s main contribution was a land reform movement called Operation Barga. Basu became CM in 1977 and his govt. launched operation Barga in 1978. The Left Front carried out a two-pronged attack. It took the no-cultivation clause seriously and closed off this loophole. Simultaneously, it encouraged the registration of tenants through the much publicized Operation Barga. In June 1978, based on discussions held during a workshop on Land Re
