The word LASER is short for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.It is an optical source that coherently emits a beam of photons. LASER light is said to be near-monochromatic, i.e., comprising a single wavelength and is a narrow beam. Common light sources, such as the common light bulb, emit incoherent beams of photons in all directions.This gives rise to a wide spectrum of wavelengths. The LASER is a variation in theory of the MASER (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) principle which was proposed in the late 1950s. LASER action, which is nothing but optical amplification, can be explained using thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. The first successful LASER demonstration was in 1960. Since then, LASER manufacturing has taken the form of a multi-billion dollar industry. The LASER has applications in various fields such as science, industry, medicine, and consumer electronics.
