What is Severn Tidal Power?
Severn Tidal Power is the name given to ideas surrounding the use of the Severn estuary to produce electricity. At the moment a UK Government project called the Severn Tidal Power feasibility study is taking place and is looking at the possibility of harnessing the estuary’s huge tidal range, which is the second highest in the world. The study is looking at the pro’s and con’s of ten options, and will make a short list towards the end of 2008. Potentially, the estuary could produce as much as 5% of the UK’s energy consumption, which will contribute significantly to the UK’s climate change goals. However, the study is looking closely into important areas such what effects on the environment the proposed schemes may have and the economic and social impacts on Wales and the South east of England.
