A1. Serial ATA is an evolution of the Parallel ATA physical storage interface that replaces the standard 40-pin cable and connector with a new 7-pin cable and connector. Parallel ATA technology has reached the point where incremental improvements in the technology are increasingly difficult to reach and it requires moving to a new interface to add greater performance and reliability. Serial ATA promises to extend the viability of ATA based technology out for another 10 years.
