What is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Sensory Processing (sometimes called sensory integration) is the way the motor system responds to information that the nervous system receives through the senses (touch, taste, feel, smell, and sound). If the nervous system is not able to organize the information it receives from the sensory system, then the motor and behavioral responses may become inappropriate to the situation. This is often known as sensory processing disorder, or sensory integrative dysfunction (SID). Sensory Integrative therapy techniques are geared toward helping children organize their sensory information so that their motor and behavioral responses can become more appropriate and may include but is not limited to specific techniques such as therapeutic brushing, vestibular stimulation using suspended equipment and balls, and the use of weighted vests and blankets.
