What is Sensory Integration/Sensory Processing?
Sensory processing is your body’s ability to receive, interpret and respond appropriately to sensory input via your senses. Although this may sound like something that should occur automatically, many children and adults have sensory processing disorders. In fact, we all have it but most of us learn to cope or compensate. It is only a problem if it is affecting your life to the point that you are unable to perform your basic activities at home, school or work. Sensory processing disorders are also associated with children or adults with autism, ADD, or ADHD. OTs treat children with SPD in a sensory clinic, at home or in school by using sensory equipment and techniques to increase a child’s sensory processing.
