SEED – a person who has all the pieces of a torrent file (full 100%) PEER – any person who has less than 100% pieces ie for a torrent file that is composed of 100 pieces, anybody with full 100 pieces (and still connected) is a SEED and all others with less than 100 pieces are PEERS. Basically when you download a file through torrent, the torrent downloader in your computer tries to download a piece that is most rare in the network (network – ie group of people already connected and downloading the torrent). This way even if even if some seeds get disconnected (during the time other peers are downloading) there is always someone in the network with each of the individual (100%) pieces. If seeds get disconnected before the peers complete the download and provided there aren’t any/enough peers within the whole network with either of the individual pieces the download can’t be completed.
