Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a technology developed by Netscape and adopted by all vendors producing related Web software. It negotiates and employs the essential functions of mutual authentication, data encryption, and data integrity for secure transactions. This exchange between the client and server is performed using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). SSL 2.0 supports server authentication only; SSL 3.0 supports both client and server authentication.
