What is section eight rental assistance?
It provides rent assistance for modest income families in privately owned rental apartments, duplexes, houses, etc. (co-ops are not eligible for this assistance). It permits landlords renting sound housing at reasonable rental rates to receive a portion of the rent for a subsidized tenant directly from the housing authority. How does the program work? • The housing authority of Park Forest will have a limited number of certificates to issue to applicants. • Applicants who receive certificates have 120 days to find a qualifying rental unit which the owner must be willing co rent under the program. • The housing authority inspects and approves the unit if it meets the program standards and the lease is acceptable. • The housing authority signs a contract with the landlord and pays a portion of the rent. • The certificate holder signs a lease with the landlord and pays the balance of the rent.* • Once participating in the program, a family remains eligible as long as their share of the re
