In brief, SB 1418 protects you, the consumer, against unqualified persons presenting themselves as paralegals or legal document assistants (LDAs). As you shop for self-help legal services, feel free to request the person’s registration number (my registration number is 0007, Los Angeles County, expiration 4/2/2006). There are still some unscrupulous practitioners who are not registered–so please be aware and protect yourself.
