The word Satan comes from the Hebrew word for adversary or enemy (Shaitan) and was adopted in Greek and Latin (Satanas) and modern languages. In the major monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Satan is seen as basically the same entity. He was Lucifer, who through his arrogant pride desired to usurp God’s status as the Supreme Being. God cast him into Hell with the other fallen angels (otherwise referred to as evil spirits, demons, devils), but they continue to influence the actions of those who unwittingly or (especially) wittingly permit it. To this day they act as adversary to God and His creation. Not all adherents of these religions today believe all these things. Many reject the idea of a devil at all.
