Here’s an answer I’ve given a few times, for people brand new to rugby. I hope this helps. Rugby is a game where you try to move the ball down the field and score more points than your opponents, by way of tries and goals. A try happens when a team advances the ball into the opponent’s end zone (try zone) and touches the ball to the ground. A try gives that team the right to attempt a conversion kick, from a point straight out on the field from where the ball was placed down in the try zone. The ball has to be kicked between the goalposts and above the crossbar, located at the front and center of the try zone. Teams can also score goals, which consist of kicking the ball between the goalposts from play, usually on the run. Penalty goals are also scored this way, except that the kicker gets an undefended free shot at the posts following a penalty against the other team.
