I have a Newfoundland and a St Bernard so can give you an idea. Firstly, Great Danes will not eat you out of house and home – it is a myth that big dogs eat a lot. Food costs me £60 a month for both dogs and I feed James Wellbeloved large breed. If you want the extra premium food such as Royal Canin then expect to pay £10 a month more but I found it too rich for my dogs. I feed my two carrots and apples as treats so pretty cheap there. Pet insurance is a must. My St has had a gastric torsion, elbow hygromas, hip dysplacia and is always ill with a stomach bug. This has cost my lovely pet insurers over £4,000 and I’ve only had to contribute £60 a time. Make sure you get cover for the life of your pet and not limited to a year per condition otherwise you could find yourself pretty poor. Insurance costs around £15-25 a month. Don’t forget that any treatment is going to cost more as a large dog needs larger doses. A simple neuter costs £200 as the anaesthetic is so costly. Meds including fl

Big dogs do cost a lot more since vaccines are given per weight and they obviously eat a lot more! Great Danes are great companions but take in to account the money it costs to repair what they will do to your home. There was an article on Yahoo just a week or so ago… maybe search “most expensive dog”. Great Danes were named the most expensive because they cause the most damage scratching on doors, knocking things over, and can chew like crazy. That is definitely something you need to keep in mind… they are gentle giants but still giants!
