What is Rotoscoping?
PART 2: Tips ‘n’ Tricks of Rotoscoping Rotoscoping is the process of importing live action footage into animation software to use as a reference when drawing. The original rotoscope, which you can see in the illustration below, was invented and patented by the Fleischer Brothers, who are perhaps most famous for creating the character Betty Boop. By drawing on a transparent sheet with a scale model of the background always in view, the animator had helpful reference points within which they could realistically position a character (or whatever image component). The aim of the rotoscope stand, therefore, was to enable the animator to draw more convincing animation – to create characters that, for instance, seemed more integrated with background designs or that seemed to move realistically within a space.
