What is RoHS Compliance and What is eWaste? Wednesday January 30, 2008 You may have seen the RoHS Compliance label on some consumer electronics products but have no idea what is means. RoHS means Restriction of Hazardous Substances and is a European directive that bans the sale of electronics products on the European market that contain more than a defined level of hazardous substances, including Lead, Mercury, Cadmium and others. It covers audio components, televisions, computers, cell phones, even coffee makers. Although it is a European standard, many manufacturers are building products that comply with the RoHS standards, including those sold in the US. Although RoHS helps reduce the manufacturing use of hazardous substances that can end up in our landfills and drinking water, the real responsibility lies with consumers, who need to properly dispose of electronics products, also known as eWaste.
