What is RMHC?
Ronald McDonald House Charities was formed in 1974, from an unlikely alliance in the USA between the Philadelphia Eagles football team, a hospital in Pennsylvania and a McDonald’s Franchisee. On hearing the plight of a young couple whose child was seriously ill with cancer but who were unable to find accommodation near to the hospital so they could be with her, they together established the first “home away from home.” After the success of the first Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald House Charities was founded, with the aim of extending this support to children and families who needed it across the world. RMHC in the UK was established in 1989 as part of a network of chapters across 52 countries, which collectively provide over 6,000 bedrooms each night for the families of seriously ill children. We are an independent charity that builds and runs “home away from home” accommodation for the families of seriously ill children. We now provide over 400 bedrooms across 14 Houses and 29
