What is RhoGam shot and how its applicable for the females who have “RH Negative” factor?
If a woman is Rh negative and her partner is Rh positive, the baby will most likely be Rh postive. During delivery, there is a chance that the mother will be exposed to the baby’s blood. Since the mother does not possess the Rh factor, her body will begin to make antibodies against it. Therefore, in subsequent pregnancies, these antibodies will cross the placental barrier and attack the growing fetus. RhoGam, also known as Rh Immune Globulin potects Rh-negative mothers against the production of these antibodies following delivery. It is a form of the antibodies that the mother is at risk for developing; however they are injected in such low quantities that they will not attack the developing fetus. Because the antibodies have been injected, the mother’s body will not make them after delivery. Eventually, the injected antibodies will break down and go away, therefore causing no problems for the next child. Hope that this helped!
