What is RFC 2217 (TruPort) and under what circumstances would I need to use it?

RFC 2217 is a protocol that can be used to exchange RS232 parameters and modem control line state change information via telnet. Primarily this is used so telnet can be used as an interface to a network device server connected to a remote serial device. You would use RFC 2217 if you are running an application that must be able to control and read serial handshaking signals, e.g. DSR, DTE, CTS, RTS and DCD over a network connection. Another use is to remotely control the serial characteristics of a device server’s serial port, i.e. speed, character size, parity, stop bits and flow control type. Note1: To use RFC2217, the device server must support this protocol. To find out whether your device server supports RFC2217, please refer to the device server’s User Guide, on the CD that ships with it and also available from http://www.lantronix.com/support/documentation.html The Lantronix Com Port Director (CPR) v4.x and higher supports RFC2217 (TruPort). The current CPR is available from http
