What is responsible for the lack of tolerance in the society?
Like you, I often wonder why people with different beliefs can’t just get along and co-exist peacefully. For centuries there continue to be horror stories of the consequences of racial and religious intolerance. Any intolerance can be reduced down to fear of the unknown and the subsequent rebellion against that which we don’t understand. Consider the eloquent statement of Stevie Wonder. “When we believe in things that we don’t understand then we suffer.” Superstitions aren’t the way. As a society, we strive to put labels on conditions, issues or those things we know little about. It does nothing to help us understand, but it gives the illusion we know what we’re talking about. So, what’s the basis of racial intolerance? Same as the basis for any other intolerance. We rebel against that which we know nothing or very little rather than get close enough to really understand it. So, we suffer.
