What is required to be an embalmer?

In most states a two year degree is required, although a few require a four year degree. Some states also separate funeral licensing requirements for funeral director and embalmer; you can be one or the other. After college there is generally a one year apprentice unless your state allows for apprenticeship while going to college. Generally speaking, the first year of college are more typical college freshman courses you find in most colleges and universities… the nitty-gritty funeral stuff and on-hands embalming is more the second year. If you already have a year of college or have graduated with another degree you might be able to use your credits to cover the first year embalmer’s school requirement. Or……. you can skip all of that and just hang out your business shingle without any college or license in the state of Colorado.
