What is remission?

0

A remission is a period of disease-free activity. Certain cases of lupus have become permanently inactive, or in total remission. Although total remission is rare, partial remission – a definite, but limited, period of inactive disease – is more common.

Remission is a decrease in or disappearance of signs and symptoms of cancer. In partial remission, some, but not all, signs and symptoms of cancer have disappeared. In complete remission, all signs and symptoms of cancer have disappeared, although cancer still may be in the body. The term remission is not used as much these days. Oncologists prefer to speak of response to treatment, such as a complete response or a partial response. When a person has a complete response to treatment and there are no other signs that the cancer is still present, we say that they have no evidence of disease (NED).
