What is reliable multicast ?
“Reliable” in the context of multicasting generally means some form of re-transmission of missing packets, using NACKs or Tree based ACKs, but it also could mean “layered” techniques using Forward Error Correction (FEC). Development of reliable multicast is very much a work in progress; see the RMT working group, the drafts referenced by the RMT charter, and the IRTF RMRG working group. There are a number of reliable multicast products in use. Cisco offers Practical General Multicast (PGM), which is now an Internet draft. Talarian offers reliable multicast based on their version of PGM, called SmartPGM and the Reliable Multicast Transport Protocol, version 2 (RMTP-II).
