What is released when you add magnesium with lemon juice(citric acid)?
The chemical released was actually Hydrogen and also magnesium dioxide, the smell you smelt was a mixture of the lemon juice and the magnesium dioxide. To find out if hydrogen wasproducedd you should first of all get a lit splint and place it in a test tube of your gas that you have collected if it goes pop then you have either oxygen or hydrogen. To then determine whether you have oxygen or hydrogen you should then get a lit splint and blow it out so that it is only glowing and then place it in a test tube of your product, if it relights then you have oxygen and if you have hydrogen it wont. I can assure you that only hydrogen is produced.
