What is Reiki?
Reiki is universal energy that comes to us from an outside source. This source is known by many names and is often referred to as the Universal Maker, God Head, or The Higher Power. Traditional Usui Reiki is a very powerful healing system – but it is also essentially very simple and anyone can learn to use it to help them develop a sense of wholeness on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels.
Reiki is a method of stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. The technique was developed in Japan and is administered by the laying on of hands. It is based on the idea that all living things have a special energy flowing through them called life energy. When your life energy is high, you’ll feel strong and confident, be more relaxed and centered and less likely to get sick. When it is low, you’ll often feel tired, be more easily affected by stress and less resistant to illness. Reiki is a Japanese word that comes from two words – Rei and ki. In the Japanese language, these words can mean different things depending on how they are used and how they are combined with other words. When they are used together for the practice of healing, the word Rei means universal spirit, Higher Power or God. The word ki refers to the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki practitioners channel energy in a particular pattern to heal and harmonize. Unlike other healing therapies based on the premise of a human energy field, Reiki seeks to restore order to the body whose vital energy has become unbalanced. Reiki energy has several basic effects: it brings about deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages, detoxifies the system, provides new vitality in the form of healing universal life energy, and increases the vibrational frequency of the body. The laying of hands is used in Reiki therapy also as in spiritual healing. There is a difference though. In spiritual healing, a person with a strong energy field places his or her hands above a particular part of the recipient’s body in order to release energy into it. So, here the healer is the one who is sending out the energy. In Reiki, however, the healer places the hands above the recipient; however, it is the recipient that draws the energy as needed. Reiki is primarily a technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It is also an energy technique because it is based on the principle of Ki or life force energy flowing through the body, and the idea that blocks or stagnation of Ki result in various forms of mental, emotional and physical dis-ease (a concept also found in Chinese medicine). The word Reiki comes from two Japanese characters Rei and Ki. Rei can be interpreted to mean universal, higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness it points to the Wisdom of God. Ki means the same thing as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian. Ki is life energy, the vital life force, universal life force or the breath of life. Reiki can be defined as spiritually guided life force energy or Holy Spirit. Reiki can never cause harm because it is loving, healing, light energy coming from and guided by the Heart and Mind of God.
