What is regional coding? Can the regional coding on my DVD player be changed?

DVD players and titles are encoded with one of six codes, which are based upon the region in which they are sold. The regional coding system limits where a particular DVD can be played. A consumer of DVDs cannot alter his/her DVD player’s region code. In order for a DVD title to be viewable, its coding must match the coding on the DVD player. DVD movies from Region 1 (U.S. and Canada) will not play on a DVD player encoded for Region 2 (Europe and Japan). Only Region 1 discs play on Region 1 DVD players; Region 2 discs play only on Region 2 DVD players, and so on. The six regions are broken down as follows: Code Country/Region 1 U.S.
