What is RBC?
Also known as Primary Nursing, Relationship Based Care focuses on the nurse-patient relationship. It strengthens accountability for care and facilitates patient and family involvement in the planning of care. The goal is to create a therapeutic relationship between a registered nurse and individual patient and his or her family. The relationship is initiated by the nurse and remains for the length of the patient’s stay. However, the primary nurse does not provide all of the care. Instead, she or he identifies the patient’s unique health needs and priorities while establishing an individualized plan of care which is communicated to other team members.
