What is radiant floor heating, and why is it better?
Radiant floor heating is: more cost effective, more efficient (uses less energy), more sanitary, less drafty, more comfortable. Radiant floor heating uses the floor of the room as a radiator to warm the room. This is better for many reasons. Heat is gently radiated into the room from the floor. This long wavelength radiated heat is transmitted through the air until it strikes a solid object that absorbs the heat. That object can be you or the furnishings in your living space. Less energy is wasted heating the air. If conversely you just heat the air you must rely on air circulation to warm the room. You experience the wonder of radiant heat when you sit by a fire at night. The air is not made appreciably warmer by the fire, except right above the fire, but you feel the warmth of the fire radiating toward you.
