Long before the action of the drug itself was understood, quinine was used for the treatment of fever. Not until the 17th century was quinine used for the treatment of malaria. This is the condition most associated with its use although, due to its antimicrobial, antibiotic, anti-pyretic and antiseptic properties, quinine has been used for multiple medical and non-medical purposes.
