What is product activation?
What is Product Activation? Many of the major software publishers are beginning to incorporate product activation into their applications. Do you know what it is and what it means to you as a consumer? Answer: Product activation is an attempt by software companies to reduce piracy by ensuring that users have a legitimate license to use the software they have installed. Products that utilize activation will function without being activated for a limited time period (usually 30-45 days) and will cease functioning if activation does not occur within this timeframe. Activation generally involves connecting to an Internet site or calling a toll-free number so your serial number can be authenticated and matched to your system through the use of a unique, randomly generated hardware ID. If your system hardware changes significantly and a software reinstallation is required, re-activation may also be required. Product activation is said to be anonymous, but many people are opposed to it becaus
Product activation is an anonymous, secure, and hassle free process that authenticates licensed users during the installation process. The process verifies that the serial number is legitimate, and has not been activated on more systems than allowed by the SolidWorks End-User License Agreement (EULA). It does not affect the ability of licensed users to use their software the way they have always done.
Product activation is validation with the manufacturer to confirm that software is genuine and that its product key is not compromised. It is analogous to the activation of credit cards or new mobile phones. Activation establishes a relationship between the software’s product key and a particular installation of that software on a device. Activation types include Retail, Volume, and OEM, and most require interactive steps such as entering a product key from the packaging or contacting a networked server or phone service center. Activation technologies and tools vary according to the different channels for the software—Retail, Volume, and OEM. See the Volume Activation 2.
