What is Primary Lymphedema?
A congenital condition resulting in dysplasia of the lymphatic system. Lymphedema Praecox occurs at puberty; Lymphedema Tarda occurs around 35 years of age. Characteristics are swelling (distal to proximal) which is unilateral or bilateral and often manifests after a triggering event. Skin is often pale and may become thick and leathery. Primary lymphedema affects women more often than men (estrogen in women’s bodies has a lot to do with the lymphatic system).
