What is POSTNET Barcode?
POSTNET Barcode stands for Postal Numeric Encoding Technique. POSTNET is the type of barcode that is used to encode ZIP code information on mail within the United States. POSTNET barcodes are used by the USPS to assist in directing mail. The USPS automated processing equipment reads the POSTNET barcode on a letter, postcard, mailer, etc. and automatically sends the mail to the proper location in the mail processing facility. The USPS developed a new barcode format called the Intelligent Mail Barcode that functions as a replacement for both the POSTNET and PLANET barcodes. According to new USPS requirements, beginning in May 2009, mailers must stop using the POSTNET and PLANET barcodes and start using Intelligent Mail Barcodes instead.
