What is possible with a firmware update to my camera?
Note that with some cameras, such as earlier Sony models, firmware updates simply aren’t an option. Fortunately, as the software running on cameras has become more complex, most manufacturers have recognized that it’s unrealistic to expect everything to be perfect when the camera leaves the factory, and too expensive to fix software problems by means other than user firmware updates. Don’t expect a firmware update to do miracles. If your camera has a noisy sensor when it leaves the factory, it will have a noisy sensor no matter how many times you update the firmware. You might reasonably expect small improvements through firmware updates: reduction in banding, slight improvements in noise, slight improvements in focusing speed or accuracy, or slight feature tweaks.
