What is Portability?
Portability is a provision which allows you to move anywhere in the United States that administers a Section 8 Assistance program and take your assistance with you. Portability allows you to gain immediate admission into a program in another jurisdiction without having to go on the waiting list. You may exercise Portability anytime, with certain restrictions. If you have not leased a unit under the Section 8 program, you must have lived in the initial jurisdiction for at least one year before exercising Portability. If you currently lease a unit under the Section 8 program, you may not exercise Portability during the first year of the lease or if you have moved during the last 12 months. Ask the Section 8 staff for more information if you think you might like to exercise Portability.
