What is Popping Sternum?
A popping sternum is the cracking or popping sound that is heard from the breastbone (sternum). This sound usually originates from the joints of breastbone and ribs. A cartilage connects these bones together called the coastal cartilage. The coastal cartilage extends from the rib and is attached to the sternum. The costochondral joints are also attached to the ribs by the same cartilages. The joint provided by the cartilages to the clavicle and sternum at the sterniclavicular joint is suspected to cause the popping sternum sound.
