In the same way that web pages are sent unencrypted by default, so the contents of the your e-mail message are unencrypted whilst in transit from your computer to our mail servers. In the same way that SSL protects your web traffic by encrypting it throughout its journey, so POP3S (secure POP3) and IMAPS (secure IMAP) protects your e-mail messages from being possibly intercepted.
