What is Political Equality?
Political equality is an important aspect of being a United States citizen and something that, to this day, not everyone enjoys. However, the “haves” do not generally realize that there are still “have-nots” in today’s society. The extent of how much of an equal voice the citizens have over governmental decisions is a significant issue that is most troubling. One of the fundamental principles in a democracy is supposedly the consideration of the preferences and general interests of all. This is displayed in the way of freedom of speech, and one-person/one-vote equality. However, how can this happen when 20 times more people are voting for American Idol, rather than the Governor or President? Political participation provides a mechanism by which citizens can communicate information about their beliefs, interests, and desires within the government.
