The Explorers is a co-ed group of young men and women ages 14 (and completed the eighth grade) to 20 years of age. It is designed for those youth that are interested in Law Enforcement as a career when they get older. It is also intended to teach youth to work as a team with other youth members and adults to achieve a successful outcome on any project that they undertake. The youths involved are from East Lyme and the bordering communities. Exploring gives the youth an opportunity to meet and work with Police Officers on a non-confrontational basis. The youth members may assist in such areas as traffic control, first aid, search & rescue, fingerprinting, public relations, community service etc. In the program they learn how and why police officers conduct themselves in the way that they do (I.E. Traffic stops, fights etc.) Youth may also participate in ride-a-longs in police vehicles and on the police boat as per pre-determined criteria. In this program, the youth are not acting as pol
