What is PlantBottle packaging?
PlantBottle PET plastic beverage bottles are made with up to 30 percent of their PET material derived from plants. The Coca-Cola Company has worked with our partners to develop a process for making PET plastic bottles that contain a blend of petroleum-based material and up to 30 percent plant-based material. Today, the plant-based material is made from sugar cane juice and/or molasses, which is a by-product of producing sugar. In some markets, we will use both recycled content as well as the plant-based material in PlantBottle packaging. For example, in Denmark, 65 percent of PlantBottle packaging will come from a combination of recycled and plant-based material. In this case, 50 percent is coming from recycled content and 15 percent from plant-based resin. Our vision is to eventually bring to market plastic bottles that are made with 100 percent renewable raw materials and are still fully recyclable, just as existing PET bottles are.
