What is plant survey and identification?
Species identification is the most fundamental step in the whole nature conservation process. It is impossible to conserve a species, or even decide whether it requires conservation, unless one can identify the species with certainty. This module aims to introduce students to the process of recognising and identifying plant species in the field, as well as giving an insight into how botanical surveys are undertaken and the resulting data analysed. You will have the opportunity to learn and apply the techniques of plant identification and classification, learn a range of important fieldcraft skills, and gain an understanding of the ways in which vegetation surveys are carried out and analysed.
