What is Pitocin?
Pitocin is the name given to a synthetic oxytocin, the hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. Like oxytocin it stimulates contractions and is administered intravenously if needed. Pitocin causes the uterine muscles to contract with greater intensity and frequency within minutes of being administered and last only a few minutes. This gives medical technicians the ability to finely control the strength and frequency of the contractions when needed.
