What is pirate radio?

0

A Pirate radio station is a station that broadcasts without a licence. In the sixties pirate stations operated out at sea, the idea being that being at sea they are beyond the jurisdiction of the law. If I understand correctly they had a big impact on radio in the UK. They were responsible for the advent of Radio 1 and commercial radio. Today they are virtually non-existent. All you tend to get is the odd very low range pirate station broadcast from the top of a residential tower block in big cities. They tend to get closed down quite quickly when they are detected by the authorities.
