What is PHN (Postherpetic Neuralgia)?
Shingles, commonly known as the herpes zoster virus is a late manifestation of the chicken pox virus known as varicella zoster. Shingles is associated with itching, redness, numbness, and the development of a rash. This is normally followed by Neuralgia. PHN (Post-Herpetic Neuralgia) occurs in most cases of shingles. It is a result of damage to the nerve fibers during the outbreak. Neuralgia / PHN is normally felt in the same area as the outbreak and is extremely painful. Many people can get pain in other areas too. The pain related to PHN / Neuralgia is described as one of the worst pains a person can endure. If left untreated, the pain is described as being similar to the sensation of banging your “funny bone” and can be unbearable. Shingles and Postherpetic Neuralgia can be treated successfully.
