What is person vs fate conflict?
All stories, regardless of whether they are fiction or non-fiction, require some sort of conflict to be interesting. Nobody watches reality TV simply to see someone walking around the mall. It becomes intersting if they do something to get kicked out of a store, their credit card doesn’t work, they help someone who is lost or has a flat tire, etc. The three basic types of conflict are: 1) man versus self (this could be literal or it could be another person) 2) man versus nature (like the movie Castaway) 3) man versus God These are nothing new since they were identified by Greek and Roman writers. Because of this, the term ‘God’ really refers to deities that the Greeks and Romans had in their mythology which includes the Fates. A ‘man versus fate’ conflict falls into the ‘man versus God’ conflict. This type of conflict involves things outside of what is direct and tangible such as aging, good versus evil, etc.
