What is person-centred supervision?
In person-centred supervision the student or practitioner and their work is supervised, rather than their cases being presented for a second opinion. The supervisor acts as a ‘reflective practitioner’ rather than as an ‘expert’. This means that the student/supervisee is encouraged to investigate and develop their own practice and learning in their own way and by making their own mistakes. Part of the supervision process includes assessment, where the student assesses their own progress with feedback from their supervisor. It is essential that both parties work to agreed and shared guidelines covering both the goals and methods of supervision. Contracting for supervision, as for practice, is therefore essential.
